A Prayer in Times of Loss

Many know the pain of losing someone you love. Lately, I’ve seen that grief touch both those close to me and in my community. After losing my aunt and uncle just two weeks apart, I know that ache. Today, I’m sharing a revised version of a prayer I spoke at my uncle’s funeral. I pray it will bring comfort, peace, and a sense of God presence to all who need it.
A Prayer in Times of Loss
Heavenly Father, You said, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” (Matthew 5:4). Today, I hold onto that promise. Father, I come before You with a heavy heart, trusting that You are the God who comforts. I pray that You would bring rest to my weary souls and peace to mind when it is overwhelmed. Wrap Your loving arms around me as I am experiencing this loss and remind me that I am not alone.
Your Word tells me in Psalm 34:18 that You are near to the brokenhearted and save those who are crushed in spirit. And Lord, my heart is broken right now. [your loved one’s name] was so many things and [your loved one’s name] absence is deeply felt. But even in this loss, Your Word assures me that You are near. You have not left me to walk through this valley by myself.
Father, Your Word also reminds me that those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy (Psalm 126:5). Right now, I am sowing tears. And that’s okay. Your Word gives me permission to grieve. It reminds me that weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. So even as I cry, I hold onto hope. Even as my heart aches, I trust that joy will come again.
Help me Lord not to rush past my grief or cover it with empty words. Teach me to grieve honestly and in a way that is healthy for my heart and soul. Let me not use scripture as a bandage to hide my pain, but as a foundation to carry me through it.
You know this moment is heavy. And yet, in the middle of it all, You are still El Roi, the God who sees. You see every tear, every sleepless night, every moment of sorrow and confusion. When I feel overlooked or overwhelmed, remind me that You see me fully and love me deeply.
You are also Jehovah Rapha, the Lord who heals. Not just physically, but emotionally, spiritually, and in so many other ways. You heal broken hearts, restore weary spirits, and mend wounded souls. So Lord, I ask You to begin that healing work in me today. Holy Spirit, be my comforter. Guide me through the days ahead. Strengthen me when I feel weak, and remind me of Your presence in every moment.
And Father, even in my grief, I thank you. Your Word says in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 to give thanks in all circumstances, not for everything, but in everything. So, I thank You for Your grace that sustains me. I thank You for the life of [your loved one’s name], for the love [your loved one’s name] gave, and the impact [your loved one’s name] made. I am grateful that [your loved one’s name] life mattered and that [your loved one’s name] memory will live on in me.
And most of all, I thank You because through it all, You are still God, and You are still good.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
